What Is the Gospel? A Clear, Simple Explanation

The short answer
The gospel is the good news that God has acted in Jesus Christ to rescue sinners and restore people to Himself. Jesus lived without sin, died for our sins, rose from the dead, reigns as Lord, and offers forgiveness and new life to everyone who turns to Him in repentance and faith.

Step by step
1. God: created for Him
The Christian story begins with God, not with our problems. God created the world and made human beings in His image, for relationship with Him and for lives shaped by love, worship, justice, and goodness.

2. Sin: the relationship is broken
We have all turned from God in thought, desire, action, and omission. Sin is more than making mistakes; it is rejecting God’s rule and failing to love Him and our neighbours. Its result is guilt, corruption, and death.

3. Jesus: God came to rescue
Jesus Christ, the Son of God, became human, lived the faithful life we have not lived, died on the cross for sins, and rose bodily from the dead. His resurrection means sin and death do not have the final word.

4. Response: repent, believe, and follow
The gospel is news that calls for a response. Repentance means turning from self-rule and sin toward God. Faith means entrusting yourself to Jesus—not merely agreeing that facts about Him are true.

5. New life: grace that transforms
God forgives, adopts, and gives His Spirit to those who belong to Christ. Good works do not purchase salvation; they grow from it. Christians still face struggle, but they no longer face it alone or without hope.

Common questions
Is the gospel advice or news?
It is first news: an announcement about what God has done in Jesus. That news then calls us to repent, believe, and follow Him.
Can good works save someone?
Christian teaching says salvation is God’s gift of grace, received through faith rather than earned by moral achievement. Good works are the fruit of new life, not its purchase price.
What does repentance mean?
Repentance is a change of mind and direction: turning from sin and self-rule toward God. It is more than regret and becomes visible in a changed path.
How short can a gospel explanation be?
It can be brief if it still makes the centre clear: who God is, what sin has broken, what Jesus did in His death and resurrection, and how we are called to respond.
