Go and Make Disciples: The Mission Jesus Gave Us

Is the Great Commission for every Christian?

The whole church shares the mission Jesus gave His disciples. Roles differ, but every believer can pray, testify, proclaim Christ, serve, disciple, and help others go.

What if I do not feel called to evangelism?

The command to make disciples is already given. A particular ministry may require additional leading, but ordinary obedience does not require waiting for a special feeling.

Do good works count as evangelism?

Good works display God’s love and can open doors, but evangelism includes communicating the gospel of Jesus. Serve boldly and speak clearly.

What does making disciples include?

It includes proclaiming Christ, calling for repentance and faith, baptizing believers, teaching obedience, gathering into healthy church life, and equipping disciples to make disciples.

Boldness Through the Holy Spirit

Can I be bold if I still feel afraid?

Yes. Biblical courage is faithful obedience because Jesus is greater. Bring fear to God, ask for the Spirit’s power, and take the next step.

Is bold evangelism supposed to be confrontational?

The gospel confronts sin, but the Lord’s servant need not be quarrelsome. Speak truth plainly, love sincerely, and refuse both compromise and fleshly aggression.

How do I receive more boldness?

Abide in Christ, fill your mind with Scripture, pray specifically, ask to be filled with the Spirit, go with believers, and practise immediate obedience.

What if people reject the message?

Jesus and the apostles were rejected. Your responsibility is faithful witness; God changes hearts. Honour the person and continue proclaiming Christ.

The Gospel of Jesus Christ

Is the gospel mainly about becoming better?

No. It announces what God has done in Christ to save sinners who cannot save themselves. Good works are fruit of salvation, never its price.

Why is the resurrection essential?

If Christ has not been raised, Christian faith is empty. His resurrection confirms His victory, lordship, and the believer’s living hope.

What does repentance mean?

Repentance is a Spirit-enabled turning of mind, heart, and direction—from sin and self-rule to God. It belongs with faith in Jesus.

How simply can I explain the gospel?

God made and rules us; we have sinned; Jesus died for our sins and rose; He commands us to repent, believe, and follow Him.

What Is Evangelism? A Biblical Definition and Why It Matters

What is the simple definition of evangelism?

Evangelism is telling people the good news of Jesus Christ — that He died for our sins and rose again — and inviting them to repent and believe in Him. The word comes from the Greek euangelion, meaning good news.

What is the difference between evangelism and discipleship?

Evangelism is proclaiming the gospel and calling people to follow Jesus. Discipleship is the ongoing life of following Him — learning and obeying His word within a local church. Jesus joined them in the Great Commission: make disciples, baptizing and teaching them (Matthew 28:19–20).

Is every Christian called to evangelize?

Yes. Every believer is called to be a witness (Acts 1:8) and to be ready to give a reason for their hope (1 Peter 3:15). Some are gifted as evangelists to equip the church (Ephesians 4:11–12), but witnessing is for all.

What are the different types of evangelism?

Common forms include personal or relational evangelism (with family, friends and coworkers), street or public evangelism, prayer evangelism, servant evangelism through practical care, campus and marketplace evangelism, and evangelistic events. The forms differ; the message — Jesus' death and resurrection and the call to repent and believe — stays the same.

Why is evangelism important?

Because people cannot believe in Jesus without hearing about Him (Romans 10:14–15), because God is patient and does not want anyone to perish (2 Peter 3:9), and because Jesus commanded His church to make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:18–20).

How to Lead Someone to Christ: A Biblical, Step-by-Step Guide

What do I say to lead someone to Christ?

Explain the gospel clearly — God is holy, we have all sinned, Jesus died for our sins and rose again, and God calls everyone to repent and believe — then ask whether anything is stopping them from turning to Jesus today. If they are ready, encourage them to call on the Lord in their own words (Romans 10:9–13), assure them from Scripture, and arrange to meet again soon.

Is the sinner's prayer in the Bible?

The Bible does not give a set prayer to recite. It does say that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved and that we are saved by confessing Jesus as Lord and believing God raised Him from the dead (Romans 10:9–13). A prayer can be a genuine way of expressing repentance and faith, but salvation comes by grace through faith in Christ, not by saying particular words (Ephesians 2:8–9).

What if they are not ready?

Respect it. Thank them for listening, offer to answer questions, and keep loving and praying for them. Never pressure or manipulate. Many people hear the gospel several times before they respond, and God is patient (2 Peter 3:9).

Do I need to be a pastor or have training to lead someone to Christ?

No. Every believer is called to be a witness (Acts 1:8). Philip was not an apostle, yet he explained the gospel to the Ethiopian official and baptized him (Acts 8). Know the gospel, depend on the Holy Spirit, and keep learning.

What should happen after someone accepts Jesus?

Help them begin following Him: read the Bible together, starting with the Gospel of John; connect them with a faithful local church; encourage baptism; pray together; and help them tell others what Jesus has done. Meet again within a week so the next step is concrete.

How to Evangelize With Biblical Boldness

Do I need special training before I evangelize?

Training helps, but every believer who knows the gospel can begin witnessing. Learn as you obey and go with mature believers when possible.

What if I am afraid?

Bring fear to God, ask for the Spirit’s boldness, and obey the next step. Courage is faithfulness in the presence of fear.

What if I cannot answer a question?

Say honestly that you do not know, return to what you know about Jesus, and offer to seek the answer. You are a witness, not an encyclopedia.

How do I avoid watering down the gospel?

Keep God, sin, the cross, resurrection, repentance, faith, and Jesus’ lordship present. Trust the Spirit rather than editing away the offence of the cross.

How to Start a Conversation About Jesus (With Questions That Work)

What are good questions to start a spiritual conversation?

Simple, respectful questions work best: Is there anything I can pray for you about? Do you have any spiritual beliefs? Who do you think Jesus was? What do you think happens after we die? If you could ask God one question, what would it be? Ask one at a time and listen to the answer.

How do I bring up Jesus without it being awkward?

Start with the person, not a script. Be curious about their life, listen well, and look for a natural bridge — something they mention, a struggle, or a question about meaning. Sharing a short story of what Jesus has done for you is often the most natural way to turn the conversation to Him.

What if they get defensive or upset?

Stay calm and kind. Ask what has shaped their view, acknowledge any hurt they share, and do not argue to win. Thank them for being honest and leave the door open. Speak with gentleness and respect (1 Peter 3:15–16) and keep praying for them.

Is it okay to talk about Jesus with strangers?

Yes. Jesus spoke with a stranger at a well (John 4), Philip with a traveller on a road (Acts 8), and Paul reasoned daily in the marketplace (Acts 17:17). Be respectful of people's time and freedom, and always use public places and wisdom.

How long should a first conversation be?

As long as the other person wants it to be. Some conversations last a minute — a kind word and a prayer — and some last an hour. Let them set the pace, and do not feel you must cover everything at once.

How to Answer the Objections You'll Actually Hear

What do I say when someone says they are a good person?

Gently move the comparison from other people to God. Most of us measure ourselves against the person next to us and come out fine. Ask whether they have ever lied, or taken something, or hated someone — then explain that the standard is God's holiness, not the average, and that this is exactly why Jesus came.

How do I respond to "all religions lead to the same place"?

Point out kindly that they make contradictory claims about who Jesus is — one says He is God, another a prophet, another a good teacher who died and stayed dead. They can all be wrong, but they cannot all be right. Then ask what they think about Jesus specifically, which is the question that matters.

What about someone who asks why God allows suffering?

Do not answer it as a puzzle if it is a wound — ask first whether something has happened to them. Then say the Christian answer honestly: God did not stay at a distance from suffering, He entered it. The cross is God suffering with us and for us, and the resurrection is His promise that it does not get the last word.

What if someone says the Bible has been changed?

Say that it is a fair thing to wonder, and that the manuscript evidence is unusually strong — thousands of early copies that agree closely, allowing scholars to see what was written. Offer to look at it together rather than settling it on the spot. Curiosity is a better outcome than a won argument.

How should I respond to someone hurt by the church?

Do not defend it. Say you are sorry it happened, mean it, and make clear that what was done to them was not Jesus. Many people who reject Christianity are rejecting something done in its name. Being the first Christian who listened instead of arguing may matter more than anything you could say.

What if they just are not interested?

Thank them and let them go warmly. This is the most common response and it is not a failure. A short, kind interaction leaves the next believer who talks to them in a better position; an argument leaves them worse. Respect a clear no and keep moving without shame.

Share Your Testimony and Point to Jesus

What if I grew up in church?

The miracle is that God made you alive in Christ. Explain how the gospel became personally true and how Jesus changed your allegiance.

How long should my testimony be?

Prepare a short two-minute version and a longer version for deeper conversation. Clarity creates room for response.

Is my testimony the gospel?

It points to the gospel but does not replace it. Connect your story to Jesus’ death, resurrection, lordship, and call to repent and believe.

Can God use an ordinary story?

Yes. The power is Christ’s, not the drama of your circumstances. Honest grace can awaken hunger in others.

How to Share the Gospel With Family and Friends

How do I share the gospel with family who already know all my faults?

Be honest about them. Your family knowing your faults is exactly why your story matters: the gospel is about grace for sinners, not good people. Tell them what Jesus has done for you (Mark 5:19), ask forgiveness where you have wronged them, and let them see the change over time.

What is an oikos?

Oikos is the Greek word for household. In the New Testament it describes the network of family and relationships around a person — and the gospel often spread through it, as with Cornelius, who gathered his relatives and close friends to hear Peter (Acts 10:24). Your oikos is the people God has already placed in your life. OikosMap.com is a free tool for mapping them so you can pray for each one by name.

What if they reject what I say?

Keep loving them. Rejection of the message is not the end of the relationship or of God's work. Jesus Himself was not believed by His own brothers at first (John 7:5), yet James later became a leader in the church. Keep praying, keep the door open, and trust God with the outcome.

Should I share my faith with coworkers?

Yes, with wisdom. Work hard and honestly, be kind, and be ready to give a reason for your hope when people ask (1 Peter 3:15). Respect your workplace's rules and people's time; invitations outside of work, such as coffee or reading a Gospel together, often go further than conversations at your desk.

Do I need to know a lot of theology first?

No. Know who Jesus is, what He did on the cross, that He rose again, and what He has done for you. The man Jesus healed in Mark 5 knew very little, but he went and told what the Lord had done, and people marvelled. Keep learning as you go.

Start a Gospel Outreach Group

How many people do I need?

Two or three faithful believers can begin. Do not despise a small start; build a praying, obedient core.

Should we connect with a local church?

Yes. Seek pastoral counsel and healthy accountability. Outreach should strengthen Christ’s church, not isolate around one personality.

What should happen when we gather?

Pray, read Scripture, ask for boldness, practise the gospel, go out, then return to worship, debrief, and assign follow-up.

How do we multiply?

Train every participant, release emerging leaders, keep the model simple, and deliberately help another place begin.

Street Evangelism: Proclaim Jesus in Public

Is public evangelism biblical?

Yes. Jesus and the apostles proclaimed and testified in homes, synagogues, marketplaces, roads, and public places.

What if someone becomes angry?

Do not answer in the flesh. Stay calm, bless rather than retaliate, disengage if necessary, and keep your team together.

Should we only offer prayer?

Prayer opens doors, but evangelism proclaims the gospel. When there is opportunity, speak about Jesus, His cross and resurrection, and His call.

What if nobody responds?

Sowing is not wasted. Pray, ensure you spoke clearly, refuse condemnation, and go again trusting God for growth.

What to Expect at Your First Outreach

Do I need to know the Bible well to go out?

No. The apostles were recognised as uneducated, ordinary men, and what people noticed was that they had been with Jesus. Go with someone more experienced, listen, and learn the answers over time. "I do not know, but I will find out" is a completely acceptable sentence.

What if someone asks a question I cannot answer?

Say so plainly and offer to find out. Honesty earns far more trust than a guess, and an unanswered question is often the reason someone agrees to meet again.

Will I have to preach or hold a sign?

Almost certainly not. Most outreach groups are conversational — walking, talking, offering prayer, and doing practical good. If a group does open-air preaching it will say so, and you would still never be pushed into it on a first night.

Is it safe?

Groups go in public places, in pairs, at set times, and a leader knows where everyone is. Tell someone at home where you are going and when you expect to be back, as you would for anything else. Trust your instincts and leave any situation that feels wrong.

What if I go and hate it?

Then you have learned something real for the cost of one evening. Some people find their place in conversations, others in prayer, practical service, or hosting. Going once tells you far more than another year of wondering.

Why Go With an Outreach Group? A Biblical Call to Witness Together

Does the Bible command Christians to evangelize in groups?

Jesus commands His followers to make disciples. Scripture gives examples of disciples being sent together and churches praying and sending workers, but it does not make a formal outreach group a condition for every act of witness. Join others where you can, and obey Christ wherever you are.

Why should I join an outreach group near me?

Believers can pray for boldness, proclaim Christ together, encourage one another, and help new disciples connect with a local church. Find a group whose message and life are faithful to Jesus, then contact them about their next outreach.

What if there is no outreach group in my city?

Begin with prayer and one or two believers who want to obey Jesus. You can start gathering in your city and add the group to the map so others who are ready to go can find you.

What should an outreach group proclaim?

The good news that the holy God saves sinners through Jesus Christ, who died for sins, rose from the dead, reigns as Lord, and calls people to repent and believe. Service and prayer should lead people toward Him.

Pray for People With Faith and Compassion

What should I say when praying?

Thank God for the person, name the need, ask for His help in Jesus’ name, and stay focused. Ordinary words offered in faith are enough.

What if my faith feels small?

Bring the faith you have to Jesus. Ask Him to increase it, stand on His word, and obey by praying. The power is God’s.

What if nothing visible happens?

Do not condemn, pretend, or give up on God. Stay honest, continue loving, and trust Him with what you cannot see.

Can I share the gospel afterward?

Yes. Prayer naturally opens a door to explain why you call on Jesus, who He is, what He accomplished, and how the person can respond.

How to Pray for the Lost: Praying for Unsaved Family and Friends

What should I pray for an unsaved family member?

Pray that God would open their eyes to the gospel (2 Corinthians 4:4–6), draw them to Jesus (John 6:44), convict them of sin and show them His grace (John 16:8), send believers into their life (Luke 10:2), and give you opportunities and boldness to speak with love (Colossians 4:2–6).

Is there a Bible verse about praying for the lost?

Yes. Romans 10:1 — Paul's heart's desire and prayer to God was for his people to be saved. 1 Timothy 2:1–4 urges prayer for all people because God desires all to be saved. Luke 10:2 tells us to pray for workers for the harvest.

What if I have prayed for years and nothing has changed?

Keep praying. Jesus taught that we should always pray and not lose heart (Luke 18:1). God is patient (2 Peter 3:9), and His timing is not ours. Keep loving the person, keep the door open, and keep sharing as God gives opportunity.

Does God answer prayers for someone's salvation?

God desires all people to be saved (1 Timothy 2:4) and invites us to pray for them. He does not force anyone to believe, but He works through prayer — opening hearts, sending messengers and creating opportunities. We pray in faith and leave the outcome to Him.

How to Make Disciples After Sharing the Gospel

What is the difference between evangelism and making disciples?

Evangelism proclaims the good news of Jesus Christ and calls people to repent and believe. Making disciples includes that proclamation and continues as believers are baptized, taught to obey Jesus, gathered with His church, and equipped to help others follow Him.

What should I do after someone says they want to follow Jesus?

Continue explaining the gospel, pray with them, and arrange to read Scripture together. Connect them with a faithful local church and encourage them to speak with its leaders about baptism. Help them begin a life of following Jesus rather than assuming a single conversation completes the commission.

Do I need to know every answer before helping a new believer?

You can begin by sharing what Scripture teaches and learning together. When you do not know an answer, say so, return to the Bible, and seek help from mature believers and church leaders. Confidence rests in Christ and His word, not in pretending to know everything.

How can an outreach group help people make disciples?

A group can pray together, share the gospel, return to ongoing conversations, read Scripture with new believers, and help them connect with a local church. It can also equip believers to go and teach others. Keep Jesus, His word, and obedience to Him at the center.

25 Bible Verses About Evangelism and Sharing Your Faith

What is the main Bible verse about evangelism?

Matthew 28:18–20, the Great Commission, is the central passage: the risen Jesus, with all authority, sends His disciples to make disciples of all nations, baptizing them and teaching them to obey Him, and promises to be with them always. Acts 1:8 adds His promise of the Holy Spirit's power to be His witnesses.

What does the Bible say about being bold in sharing faith?

The early believers prayed for boldness and were filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke God's word boldly (Acts 4:29–31). Paul asked others to pray for boldness for him (Ephesians 6:19–20) and told Timothy that God gave us a spirit of power, love and self-control, not fear (2 Timothy 1:7–8).

Is every Christian called to evangelize?

Yes. Jesus gave the Great Commission to His disciples and promised to be with them to the end of the age (Matthew 28:18–20), and every believer is called to be His witness (Acts 1:8) and to be ready to give a reason for their hope (1 Peter 3:15). Some are gifted as evangelists (Ephesians 4:11), but all are called to witness.

What verse says the harvest is plentiful?

Luke 10:2 (and Matthew 9:37–38): the harvest is plentiful but the labourers are few, so pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into His harvest.

Plunder Hell, Populate Heaven: Why the Great Commission Needs Senders

What does 'plunder hell and populate heaven' mean?

It is a phrase made famous by the evangelist Reinhard Bonnke, drawn from what Scripture says about the gospel: Jesus binds the strong man and plunders his house (Matthew 12:29), the gates of Hades will not prevail against His church (Matthew 16:18), and the gospel turns people from the power of Satan to God (Acts 26:18). It is not about violence or hype. It means people being rescued from darkness and brought into God's kingdom through faith in Jesus Christ.

Is it biblical to financially support evangelists and missionaries?

Yes. Paul thanked the Philippians for their partnership in the gospel through giving (Philippians 1:5; 4:15–17), hoped the Romans would help him on his way (Romans 15:24), and John wrote that supporting those who go out for the sake of the Name makes us fellow workers for the truth (3 John 5–8). Jesus also taught that the labourer deserves his wages (Luke 10:7).

Do those who send share in the reward of those who go?

Scripture points that way. David ruled that those who stayed with the supplies share alike with those who went into battle (1 Samuel 30:24). Paul told his supporters that he sought the fruit that increases to their credit (Philippians 4:17), and Jesus said whoever receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet's reward (Matthew 10:41). Our motive is the glory of God and the salvation of people, but God does not overlook those who send.

Finding a group

How do I find an evangelism or outreach group near me?

Search your city, choose how far you can travel, and open a group profile. The profile shows the meeting details and contact methods the group has published. Contact the group to ask about its next outreach, then go with them. Distances are approximate straight-line distances, not driving distances.

Do I need an account to join an outreach group?

You do not need an EVANGELIZE.WORLD account to browse groups or contact them. Each group arranges its own participation. Use its published contact link to ask when and where to meet; viewing a profile does not register you with that group.

What if there is no outreach group in my city?

Look at nearby groups, or gather believers to begin one in your city. Pray for boldness, invite someone who wants to share Jesus, and choose a first time to go together. Use Start a Group to submit the new group for review, or register your interest in the city.

Do I need experience before I begin sharing Jesus?

The Great Commission begins with the authority of Jesus, not your experience. Ask the Holy Spirit for boldness, learn the gospel from Scripture, and take a step of obedience. A local group can tell you how it welcomes new people and what support it offers.
